Our take

What you need to know

A kitchen scale is the cheapest upgrade most home cooks can make. Weighing flour instead of scooping it, portioning meals or measuring coffee by the gram removes a lot of guesswork, and this Etekcity model is one of the most popular ways to start.

The specs are exactly what everyday cooking needs. It reads up to 11 lb (5 kg) in 1-gram increments, switches between grams, ounces, pounds:ounces, fluid ounces and milliliters, and has a dedicated tare button to zero out the bowl. Etekcity's own spec sheet lists it at 7.3 × 5.7 × 0.6 in, slim enough to slide into a drawer, with a 2-minute auto-off, a backlit LCD and two AAA batteries already installed. It comes with a 2-year warranty.

Owners repeatedly mention how compact it is, how readable the display is and how simple the two buttons are. The stainless platform wipes clean, and people use it for far more than baking: meal prep, macro tracking, pet food portions and even postage.

It isn't a lab instrument. A couple of owners note readings can wander by about a gram, one long-term owner says accuracy became unreliable after more than a year, and wide bowls or plates can hide the display. If you need 0.1-gram precision for espresso or very small quantities, buy a dedicated precision scale instead.

Great, but eventually becomes inaccurate

Worked great until it didn’t. A year and change into using this, the weight accuracy started to get completely unreliable. It would go back to working again randomly (I didn’t ever figure out a fix myself) within a day or two, so I kept it, but now 3 years in, it hasn’t weighed properly in over two weeks so I’m looking to replace it. Unfortunate because I otherwise loved it. It stays on long enough for me to gather ingredients and other stuff without having to worry it would turn off, which is especially cumbersome if you’re combining stuff in a bowl or plate. The surface is a nice glass that is easy to clean. Recharging is easy and the charge would last ages, I’m talking at least a month. I liked the variety of units you could measure by. The screen lights up well and the numbers are highly visible. All of this is why I’m giving it 4 stars instead of less—it really was great while it was working. But I really cannot keep using it if it’s going to keep going wonky on me. I already messed up a loaf of bread because of it. Wasted expensive specialty flour too :(

Nice little food scale.

I am enjoying this scale. It isn’t totally accurate, as the same thing can be said to be a gram or so different within a few minutes. But the differences are not at all worrisome. If you are worried about a gram either way, this isn’t the right sort of scale for you. For cooking, though, this is wonderful. I have used it particularly to weigh the various things I put in my morning cereal bowl, so that the concoction is more or less the same every morning and is reasonably in line with what the box says is one serving. Since my cereal bowls are large, it is all too easy to pour far too much into the bowl if you don’t weigh or measure the ingredients. Beyond simple weighing, probably the most useful feature for me is the Zero button. You can put an empty bowl on the scale, zero it out, and then easily get the weight of what you put into the bowl. The scale ignores the weight of the bowl itself. As you put the ingredients into the bowl, you can zero it out after each one, to get the weight of each ingredient separately, without any arithmetic. This feature is especially welcome first thing in the morning, when I am too sleepy to do the most elementary calculations correctly. It is also helpful to be able to weigh portions as you divide up meat or something else, such as a big bowl of salad, into single servings. Since I live alone and often need to do this, something to allow me to make the servings equal is invaluable. Of course, the scale is also useful for non-cooking tasks, when you need to know the weight of something small. For instance, are you sure that envelope you are putting in the mail is really under an ounce? Put it on the scale to be sure how much postage you need. (Changing from one unit of measurement to another is just a matter of touching a button, in this case perhaps several times, as the function circles through the various measures available, rather than jumping directly to the one you want.) Turning on or off is a matter of touching a button (no need to press; just touch). Operation is quick - most functions are virtually instantaneous. The exception is that the unit “thinks” a bit when weighing. The weight changes a little over a few seconds, so waiting until it stabilizes instead of taking the first weight displayed is a good idea, if you are looking for an accurate result. The change isn’t large, however, so if getting the most accurate possible weight is not important to you, there is no strong reason not to take the first displayed weight. Just know that what displays in the first second is probably slightly off. Charging, which I did need to do after a few months, is much quicker than I expected.. I put it on the charger, thinking that it would take hours, but it charged in much less. I didn’t note the exact time, so I can’t say just how long it took, but I remember being quite surprised at how fast it was. Overall, I am more than pleased. I hope the unit continues to function so well.

Exactly what I needed at an amazing price

I’ve been really happy with this kitchen scale. It’s compact enough that it doesn’t take up much counter space, but the 11 lb capacity is more than enough for everything I’ve needed to weigh. The display is easy to read, and switching between grams and ounces is quick and simple. The measurements seem very accurate and consistent, which makes portioning ingredients and keeping track of amounts much easier. I also really like that the surface is easy to wipe clean after using it. It’s straightforward to use without a bunch of unnecessary features or a complicated setup. Just turn it on, place what you’re weighing on it, and you’re good to go. For the price, this is a great little scale and has been a very useful addition to my kitchen. Definitely recommend it if you’re looking for something affordable, accurate, and easy to use.

Great scale, love the batteries - hold a charge much longer than USB IMO.

This is a great little compact scale - has all the various measurements you would need -~ versatility w/ ounces, fl. ounces, grams, etc. Okay, the price is outrageously great and I have a feeling the newer model that uses USB will put the one I'm reviewing here in the extinct' category. I don't what it is - but that USB recharging option is just less expensive to produce for manufacturer's and they charge more, but I much prefer the batteries! It just seems they hold their charge SO much longer! I have little touch lamps and I barely use them and before I know it, back to the USB plug I go to recharge. Gets on my nerves. Yes, I really like this scale - have had NO problems, never had to change a battery - weigh out my dog's food on it daily. It's been great, easy to use and have had it over a year.

Batteries included, slim, low profile, grams/ ounces. Nice, easy to read.

So this was smaller than my previous Basics kitchen food scale, but I believe it is lower profile and easier to store in a drawer. It weighs food by digital grams and ounces… as versatile as anyone would need to weigh food I guess.. The tare function is useful in cancelling the weight of the bowl or plate you are using to hold the food you are weighing, so you don’t have to factor in the total weight of whatever you need portioned. The numbers are somewhat easier to see than other scales IMHO, or at least the digital scales I used to own anyway. The quality feels higher as well. One note is that the two AAA batteries came already installed, and the best part was that it was separated by a plastic tab that you pull out. How is that for connectivity? What a great idea!

Perfect scale for weighing pet food, great buy, love so far!

Got this to accurately measure kibble grams for my doggo who needs to lose weight 🙁. Love it so far!! So easy to use (tare is so easy, this is my first food scale so this may or may not be the norm), just the right size for his storage containers (I prep meals the night before), nice compact size/weight. Makes prep a breeze and is MUCH more accurate than measuring cups. Stainless steel is easy to keep clean. Easy to read display . And it comes with batteries, so you can immediately start using it. Great buy!

Accurate, easy to use, and a great value

Great kitchen scale, very happy with it. Pros: • Accurate, readings are consistent and precise • Easy to use, the tare and unit buttons are simple and the display is easy to read • Compact and easy to clean, the stainless surface wipes down and stores easily • Good value, a lot of scale for the price Cons: • Big bowls and plates block the display A minor thing, so it still gets 5 stars.
